well i just setup my free 75 gallon (was told 90 but n e ways) the over flow sucks! no really, it is loud! the u-pipe that came w/ got broken in transit, so i made a pvc version. the problem seems to be that when its draining to the sump it pulls air, slows and quiets, flows good and then gulps air again, and my u pipe isnt leaking air its seems the drain is either causing it or? no bubbles, taped a air line line into the highest point. the over flow drain wont stop surging tho?

Just sounds like your overflow is running faster than your pump (good thing), when its sucking air it slows down a bit, causing the water level in the tank to rise as the pump catches up, until the overflow is fully submerged and creations a full siphon (or just full water flow without air) again.
