Hola,

The wet/dry I am going to set up for a 560 freshwater native tank has no way of prefiltering the water. I don't want to just lay felt on the bio media. I'd like the water prefiltered before it gets to the drip tray. I was wondering if the prefiltering could be done in the overflow that will be built into the tank. If this is a stupid idea, what is the best way to prefilter.

Thanks!

I would think so i dont have a drilled tank but there is a prefilter in my overflow box and it works great. Maybe someone with a drilled tank will chime in.

You could put a filter sock on the line entering the sump.

I have not been able to think of a way to install a filter scock before it drains into my sump. The problem is that it drains into a contained drip tray. I would need some sort of in-line prefilter or use by built in overflow as one.

Do you have a pic of your.set up it may help to see what your working with.to come up with ideas

^^^^^^

The filter is 7 feet long and 18 in wide. As you can see, the drip tray is totally enclosed so there is no way I can put a filter pad on it. I need a way to pre filter! The bio blocks are gunna get filled with unwanted suff!

If there is room between the tank and sump, I would add a length of vertical pipe, wide enough to hold a filter sock. You would to put an elbow into the union on top of the drip tray then reducers from say 3" PVC into the elbow. Similar to how I connect the vertical pipe in the photo.

I have an 18" filter sock atop the vertical 4" pipe that prefilters pond water just above the stack of lava rock.

Your vertical pipe wouldn't need to be as tall of course, you'd only need enough length to hold the filter sock, 12" to 18", or how ever long you decide you need.
I am building a similar fractionator, scaled down for inside.

Do you have Bio Balls for the First chamber not shown in the pics.. ?? It looks like it's a tower set up..... The three chambers stacked on top of each other. ?

Can you show us a pic of it all together. ?

TheFishGuy, over at cichlid-forum.com (I believe he's a member here as well) posted one that I think might work very well for you on this one. The concept is that a wire trash can hangs from the rim of the 5 gallon bucket. Since it has a solid bottom, the water is forced through the wire mesh sides of the trash can, which is lined with mechanical filter media. After it goes through the media, the now-filtered water drops to the bottom of the bucket where the pvc pipe would continue to take it to your sump. I think he had 4 of these pre-filtering his 1600 gallon tank.
