I have a 180 with a wet/dry bioball system run by a Quiet One 2200 it also has a HOT Magnum at the other end of the tank. The sponge in the overflow strainer constantly clogs to the point that I have to pull it out and rinse it every few days or the tank itself will almost fill up and run over.My question is should I purchase a new sponge(had it for years) due to maybe the fibers breaking down or what else should I do?

I found it normal to rinse a sponge daily with large cichlids.
After a while I took it out of the overflow box and put it in the sump, then put it in line after a filter sock.
This eliminated the constant rinsing, and overflow issues.

i just never used it for that reason... add a lil extra filter floss or something to the sump... works better imo and saves you that head ache of every other day sponge cleaning

I have a filter pad on the drip plate just over the balls that seems to catch a good bit of junk but there is still crap down on the bottom surface and some gunk in the pump area.I suction all of this out regularly so where should the extra floss be put.

your always gonna get junk in the bottom of the sump.. add it on the drip plate or just use the blue bonded pad... i switched to that and no longer use the floss....

Once I looked down there and a pile of tha t junk looked like a fish,I was wondering how it got down there then I noticed what it was...or wasnt. The blue bonded is what I use on the drip plate.I will look into that Durso standpipe thing as well.Thanks.
