Good Morning,

My question is this. I have a bottom drilled 125 gallon tank. A total of 4 holes, 2 sets of 2 on the back portion of the tank.

The tank came with 2 overflow boxes which were covered in algae and calcified worms (saltwater tank).

I'm in the process of removing the boxes which came with durso pipes. Would I be able to just have straight pipes coming from the bottom with strainers attached to the top?

The tank had a bunch of other stuff included with the craigslist deal. I have a 29 gallon tank that I will convert into a sump and 2 1800 gph mag drive pumps.

I have attached a photo for reference.

Too much filtration with the 2 mag drives?

Instead of the double locline returns on each mag drive, I was thinking of possibly running and "under-gravel" return system on each with a single surface return

Thanks for any input.....

Before you go any further, look into the Herbie method, and use it. You'll be glad you did :)

Yes.

J brings up a good point. There are some good ways to make overflows dead silent. If you are starting fresh, you might as well look into it.

that makes sense.

the first youtube video i pulled up it made me nervous at how low the pipes were in conjuction with the water line.

on a 125 gallon, i could have the pipes 1" below the water line which would translate into around 5-6 gallons in my sump during a power outage.

in my first post i asked would this be too much water flow in the tank. it came with 2 1800 gph mag drive (impellers need to be replaced) is that too much water flow???

thinking about it more, the return lines (1 per pump) will have 1 locline return and i will incorporate an under-gravel system to help keep particulates suspended.

any thoughts?
