This bugs me, it feels like a stupid question but, i want to know if an overflow box must be made with the same material thickness as the tank

No it does not. The overflow box does not have as much pressure against it as the tank itself does. Take a 6' tank where the water has 6' of surface area to apply force against. Most overflows are only 6 inches wide. I just built a 6' wide by 2' tall tank out of 1/2" acrylic, I use 1/4" for the overflows and it works with no problems.
