Hey comrads: I'm back with with a few more ?estions concerning overflows. i just completed my second diy sump system.first sump is using a diy skimmer box and 5 gal bucket and everything is running smooth. The second sump is a sterilite 30 gal and sterilite 3 storage draws inside sump. But this
time I've made and using an overflow.(diy) My ?uestion is how do i get the maximum flow (pull) from my overflow. dosn't seem to be a strong enough pull. however, everything is in synch, sump not out doing overflow and vise verse. Is there any ajustment that needs to be done on pipes in terms of pipe height inside tank. There is no restriction on inlet. But i do have A Tee on inlet.
Also I'd like to know what can i use as a strainer on inlet because the food goes staight down pipe. Please give me some feedback. I want all my comrads to know that i'm very happy about the completion of my diy projects. Thanks to all... my next project will be a 100+gal tank.;)
ps, what is the taller pipe on overflow is used for? do i need to place a cap on it and if so do i need to drill a hole in the top or somthing? i realy need to know.Thanking you in advance...

For the flow the best way to get maximum flow is ensure no air is getting into system (and all air is removed from the part going over the tank). What size PVC did you use?

For pipe height inside tank your main concern should just be what height you want the water in the tank at (and making sure it is not so low that your sump will overflow if pump stops).

If your pump is not overflowing your tank though then an increase in "pull" from the tank will not do you any good. Water can leave an overflow only as fast as water comes into the tank. Of course if you upgrade pumps or something you will need to ensure your overflow is still sized large enough.

The taller pipe should not be capped (unless you drill a hole in it). Unless you have a reason to need to cap it with a hole in it though just leave it open.

I'm using 1" pvc pipe as my overflow. I guess I'll have to upgrade my pump. so how do i ensure that theres no air in pipe for max flow? I'm currently using a quiet 1 one 1200 pump for this set up on my 29gal tall tank. on the other tank 75 gal I'm using quiet 1 2200 1.25 pvc pipe. should i upgrade my pipe as well? Halla back.
