I'm running an overhead sump on my 350. No other options. My question is can I just put a couple 2x4 cross braces from tank edge to edge to hold it? There will be about 300lbs of media and water

... imo. youll want to construct a bridge like structure that spans the 350 and is rigid enough to hold the overhead sump ...
Even that I don't think is safe enough. The total weight of the sump will be taken on the top on the side panels. Not designed for that.

To be safe, you really need an external frame.

Thats not what i meant to describe. This would be a completely free standing stand with posts all the way to the ground that essentially "straddles" the tank and stand.
