alright i am sure this has been asked many times but i really want to figure out how to make my overflow syphon from the bottom of the tank instead of acting like a skimmer at the top, right now it would be going on a 46gal bowfront and then possibly onto a 75gal since they are the same height. if anyone has any tips, suggestions, or a design that has worked for them it would be greatly appreciated and if someone could explain the one from overflow 101 that would be spectacular

u cant. u can only make sure that the flow rate in your tank is high so that the current sweeps up the crud from the bottom. u can add a wave maker or a power head in the tank to additionally do the same job. how high is your tank ?

for the system shown by chompers would it start back up if the power went out and the pump put the water back to the right level or would i have to restart the prime again? and is there a need for an uptube like on the regular overflows where the syphon break is? but my tank is just shy of 21" tall and has about 2" of substrate so what would be a good depth to run a deep overflow?

Yes it would start back up if the power went out without priming it again and it would pump the water back to the level you have your T on the back side connected to the U .

The other Overflow sets the water depth from surface skimming, when the water lowers to the pipe it stops. This overflow the water depth is set from the T heidth after the U on the back of tank.. If you want the water level 4 inches from the top the T needs to be set at that level..

Yes you need the uptube for air. Without the uptube the water will siphon down to the bottom of your Tube in the tank draning all the water out to the sump and overflowing it(unless your sump is bigger than your tank but that would be silly.. :)).. This is critical so when the water gets low to the T it stops when the power goes out because of the UPTUBE. Don't make this style overflow without the UPTUBE....And the skimming style overflow needs it also or the water will be sucked out breaking the siphon when electricity shuts off........

As long as you leave it high enough so it doesn't suck up the substrate. I have sand in my tank so I have a canister filter fx5 also that sucks to about 3/4 the way down in the tank.... I'd say 4 to 5 inches from the bottom....or what ever makes you feel satisfied higher/lower....
