I have had my GT for 2 1\2 yrs and havent ever had any problem. I wake up yesterday and start feeding my tanks and turning on lights. I noticed a small pit in the middle of my GT's forehead.

I do weekly water changes\gravel cleaning no matter what. I have six tanks and I do one a night. So water quality isn't an issue. I feed him hikari cichlid gold and bloodworm treats.

So why the hell would this fish sprout up HITH overnight?????

you have carbon in your filter?

Yea I have carbon in my magnum 350, I am also running a fluval 404 with half biomax and half foam, and UG filtration with two powerheads and a stand alone powerhead for adding oxygen and added surface agitation

i've heard that carbon can agitate the initial HITH and make it worse, remove the carbon and keep up the water changes 40% every other day

I'm not a fan of canister filters because - unless you pre-filter tham or clean them about weekly - they can become a big source of nitrates for your tank. Think about it: when pellets, food and poop get sucked into a canister, what happens to them?

I think that's also the source of the rumor that carbon causes or irritates HITH (use of carbon in dirty cannister filters).

That said, if it's a single spot in the middle of his head, it doesn't sound like HITH (which usually starts as separate spots on both sides of the head).

a single hole...maybe he bunked his head?

He rams the tank with his head all the time and always has...... It could very well be a sensory pit???? I pay really close attention to my fish and im sure i would of noticed it before.
