Anyone have a good design for an overhead sump for a 90 gallon aquarium? I have seen Joey's but I would like some comparators. Also i have a maxi jet 1200 to power the system. Will this be enough of should I got with a larger pump?

For ease and cost effectiveness I would recommend a 4" or larger pvc pipe. Cut down the middle in half. End cap can still be glued on thread a barbed fitting into that. Drain on the opposite end. Works amazing and only costs around $25

I've seen these before and heard that they are popular in Asia,or used to be,what are the advantages to overhead filters verses those that are below the tank?

It's just a little more practical for safety factor everything is contained above the tank.

With a sump under the tank. If your sump leaks your screwed. If your tank leaks your screwed. In some cases depending on the system if the return clogs you can be screwed.

Overhead if it leaks means nothing. If it cloggs it just overflows and returns to the tank.

Those are some good points.

Mine is painted black. It sits in the room next to the window and often it gets fairly warm from the sun. Free heat. Mine is more like a spray bar but it's the same idea.

what did you power it with?

Just a little aquaclear 50 power head. It was in the sump and drawing up (negative head pressure / suction) it wasn't bad to prime. I just had a cup and would pour water in the chamber as the pump ran, once the uplift tube filled up the water stopped draining and pumped upwards again.

If I had to do another setup like this the pump would be in the tank
