Overstocked?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on the type of fish in the tank. Its argued several different ways ,the easiest to explain is 1 " of adult fish per gallon. But that has been proven incorrect by alot of fish keepers. Me personally i say african cichlids can be overcrowded but ,make sure you do at least 25% a week water changes and you have filtration rated for ten times the tank size.
Sa cichlids grow much larger on average so they should be less crowded . Bigger fish =more waste. for sa cichlid i take the length of the fish add it to th girth of the fish and times that by 4 . So a 10"l by an 8"girth fish x 4 =72 so i would keep that single fish in a 72 gallon or larger tank.

How can you tell if your tank is over stocked? I know the inch per gallon rule does not apply.

if your fish have enough room to move around comfortably and your nitrates dont rise at a ridiculous rate, your not overstocked for the tank

if you have no ammonia or nitrite, then your not overstocked for the filter.

There's no official way of determining if a tank is overstocked or not. It's subjective.

If you have concerns, post your tank and it's inhabitants. mfk should be able to give you a good idea.

currently i have a juvi ocell in a 55 grow out and am planning on putting that and either a mono or orino plus an aro in a 250 will this become a grow out? also using a sump. And to ad are there any species of aro that have a smaller adult size? im just thinking about the future right now.

A 250g should be big enough for those fish. I'm not sure if any arowana species is significantly smaller than the other species, but again a 250 should suffice.

in your opinion would that be it for fish? or do you think I could add some kind of cat? just trying to get a plan for the near future.

i think this is overstocked
