I have 2 jack dempseys, 3 african zebras, 2 austrases, and a convict is this tank overstocke it is a 40g. I have heard to think for every gallon thats how many inches of fish you can have i was wondering if that was coorect?
The 3 africans shouldn't be in a tank that small, much less the fact that they're in a tank with CA/SA cichlids (who also require a much larger tank than that) probably won't bode well for very long.
Yes you are overstocked. Any one of the SA cichlids require a min. 55 imo. Drop all of the SA cichlids and it could be a decent african tank. Best of luck whatever u do

Agreed. Would eliminate everything but the Africans and make it an African tank. As stated SA/CA Cichlids require much more space then Africans. If you wanted to stick with SA/CA you would be fine with a pair of convicts in a 40g but that would be it other then a bottom feeder in there.
