I don’t know
i built my stand for my new 180 coming next week. I followed the plans from "rocketengineer" on a reefer thread.
All 2x6 #1 southern Douglas fir construction and 3/4 in plywood on the back and top.

I wanted to keep the center open to add in a 4' tank underneath the 180, down the road- but probably not too far...

I put a 2x4 vertical support both front and back 49"s from the corner supports, will this beast be strong enough for the 180 given the 2x6 is only spanning 49" at the furthest?

I don't understand span tables and my tank is all glass and framed- just looking for confirmation that I'm not crazy and this is more than adequate- the corners sit on vertical 2x6's

thanks!

I found a thread that was ""rocketengineer" on a reefcentral.

This is what he said:

(2) Red - Upper Rails: Length = W
These will be sized according to length: 2X4 for 48" or less for smaller tanks (Rule of thumb is 75g-90g); 2X6 up to 72" with 125g-150g being acceptable; For longer spans and larger tanks 2X8s are recommended.

His suggestion seems to be 2x8 for tanks that are 6 feet and over 150g. You are using 2x6. Those boards are significantly different in load capacity.

If you post your build, people can look at it. Is 2x8 excessive? I don't know. Others who build these would be able to make suggestions. However, as this is a glass tank, it's important for the surface to stay rock solid and to have minimal deflection.

Also, did you attach the plywood top to the 2x6's?

Again 2x6 might be swell for this. Just saying it didn't match what the other post said.

A picture would help a lot.

I have 3/4 inch plywood on the top and the back, 1/2 inch on the lower shelf for the 75 gallon.

I added in the 2x4 as a supplement since im foregoing the center brace, this shortens the span to 49 inches unsupported- there are also 4 rails under the plywood top and 3 below the plywood lower shelf.
