they are the closest thing to a community fish that i've seen that size. mine won't even eat live at 22". the only must haves are a crap load of space and the patience to hand feed and pet em. mine is like a dog, when it gets in a bad mood petting him always calms him down and chills him out. wierd
This has to be one of my favorite catfish, it's too bad that it gets so huge that most aquaria won't house it because it is a great personality fish. I don't currently have any, the ones I had outgrew my largest tank at the time (135) and were moved to an indoor/outdoor pond here in Florida. They are now close to three feet in length!
They don't seem to bother anything in the aquarium except that for no particular reason, they have been known to go berserk, smashing into the tank and its contents. They love any bottom sinking type food, especially if it contains shrimp. I think you could keep them with any non-agressive and probably some agessive species, maybe even neon tetras! They will learn to eat from the surface and can be trained to take food out of hand.
You have to be really careful when your hand is in the tank with them, or when trying to move them. They have what looks like shark's teeth in a row along their sides, and yes, they are very sharp.
Miss my two and hope to get another and a bigger tank for it!
I went ahead and bought him he's approx.5-6" and was 39.99 was that a good price? i think it was but i wanted it really bad so any price would've been good!!! he's in the 210gal tank with my:
