I have a juvenile that has grown from 14 to 18" in three months. I am working on its definite home tank design. Finally I was able to get a 2' x 6' plastic frames for glass tanks. If I use 1/2" thick non-tempered glass I get a safety factor of 1.80 according to an aquarium glass thickness calculator I found on-line.

Question 1: what does this means in practical terms?).

It's a 225gal tank that will end up with probably 140 gals of water. 6" depth substrate displaces 45gal; air gap at the top of 3" ends displacing another 22gals, and I figure a couple of good sized river rocks, a big driftwood, and a few Vallisnera gigantea and Anubias barteri species plants should displace another 20gals.

Mostly a species only tank, it shall become temporary home of hybrid tilapias (that I expect the lungfish will end up eating).

A mahogany (or mahogany color painted sturdy wood) as a stand both to elevate the tank to ideal height and also hide the wet/dry filter.

Question 2: Is it safe to go with a bottom drilled tank? Is there areal risk of the West African Lungfish create problems with the PVC pipes and bulkheads?

I ask because I've seen chewed plastic intake tubes in a couple of pics in the web.

Question 3: Can I introduce other P annectens in that tank or is it better to keep it solo?

Thanks for your feedback

Wow you really put some effort in designing the tank!

Q1: That tank should be totally fine for your lung...not quite sure what you are asking though

Q2: Sorry I've never dealt with a bottom drilled tank before so I can't help you there

Q3: Keep you lung by itself. Lungfish of all species are all very hositile towards there own species and only occassionally can you get away with more than 1 of a species per tank. King-eL is one of the few that has kept multiple lungs together successfully.

Good Luck!

My dear West Africa Lungfish, aka Wally, has become my wife's favorite fish. She sings a lullaby to him/her and he/she goes right to meet her in the actual growing tank.

I finally have the opportunity to place a big tank in our living room, so I went with this 225gal. I'm considering a custom built stand made out of treated wood painted in mahogany like color. I want it to be on the low height range but I have no idea what the lower end [in terms of stand height] should be. What I mean is I don't want to end with a too low stand.

Question 4: What would be the minimum stand height for a 30"H tank?
