I'm getting a 7" "Nigerian Lap" tomorrow. I probably should've asked these questions earlier, but anyway what's the growth rate of a typical Lap; and are they a reclusive species? Also - generally which is the more colourful - a Guinean Lap or Nigerian Lap?

Thanks in advance.

it should have ok growth right now. but generally they are slow grower, due to the fact that they're typically shy. of course this will also depend on the individuals to some extent.

as for which one's more colorful. both can be. lapradei (both variants) base color and pattern contrast can depend a lot on substrate color. in addition, Nigerian lap can vary a lot in color and pattern contrast from individuals to individuals.

Thanks for the reply. Well my tank has black gravel and a black background. Should I expect my Lap to have more vivid patterns?

Lapradei show better color over reddish gravel.
Endlicheri show better color over brown gravel.
Palmas types show better color over dark type gravel.

Your lap will have better coloration over black substrate. Most polys do.
no, not exactly. red substrate will typically bring out the best color and pattern contrast. with black substrate (and especially combined with a darker environment such as dim lighting), the base color will generally turn dark, sometimes very dark, fading the patterns. the only up side is, it could make any green color the fish has more pronounced or easier to see.
