Upon posting a pic of my bichir in the above stickied thread, I learned that it's not a Lapradei like I was told it was. No difference to me really, I just wanna know some facts on them.

How rare are they compared to the other species, and even the other subspecies of endli? (maybe someone could list the common species in rarity order?)

What is the typical price points for this species in the U.S.? I paid about $90USD for this guy at about the same size he is now (i've only had him maybe a month or two). But he was also listed as a Lapradei.

Also what's their max captivity size? Mine is currently 9 inches. I've looked online, but I've seen anything from 24"-36". And one site said a foot.

Also, how agressive does this species get? My fiance and I joke that he is our "stick fish", because he just sits perfectly still all day in my plants. I rarely see him move, although every time i look at my tank I see him in a different position.

Any information would be much appreciated, and I thank you in advance for your replies.

Here's a pic to help with the questions:

in a few years time they will get 2'+ but you have awhile before that happens..agression is like any other bichir imo.. i have 2 together and never seen them pick on other fish or each other 90 for it is a lil high but standard for the most part lfs price

nice endli btw

Thanks for the info.. He'll be in a 200g tank within the next couple weeks, so I'm not too concerned with size, just wanted to know what I'm looking at in a few years. lol.

Thanks for the compliment too!

I think the rarest ones are ansorgii, teugelsi, and p.bichir.bichir. Endli endlis are more common since aside from steady supply of wild caught ones, they're also farm bred in asia. P.e.congicus are less common since they're still wild caught and there's no word yet if they're being bred in captivity now too.

The max in captivity is probably right around 2 feet. They're reported to grow bigger than that in the wild but I haven't seen one pass 2 feet in aquaria. Although it varies from individual, bichirs are generally not aggressive.

I think he hides in the plants because you have a RTC in their with him!;)
I know you said the RTC is only an inch or so longer than your endli, but BELIEVE ME he is FULLY capably of eating (or at least trying and probably killing) that endli right now. The endli knows this and is most likely doing his best not to attract attention to himself lol.
That being said, I have a lot of wood and rocks in my tanks and my endlis hide all the time unless they are being fed.
Also keep in mind polypterus don't have a snowballs chance in hell of keeping up with any big cat when it comes to growth rates, so in the next couple of months the RTC WILL try to eat him.

Yea, my RTC isn't doing so hot right now though. He's actually at my LFS who's owner is a buddy. The cat is submissive to my jardini in the tank (who doesn't care about the bichir at all), but lately he's been annoying the jardini to the point that he's being attacked now. First RTC I've ever had, and I must say that I think they're not the brightest of fish. Not sure if I'm gonna hold onto him, he's growing at an extremely fast rate too. When I first got him, a year ago, he was so small I was afraid the arowana was going to eat him, he didn't of course. But now the RTC is getting bigger then the jardini, which is why I think it's starting to be a problem. I may end up donating him to someone pretty soon, which would also allow me to pick up some Datnoids that I've been wanting. :nilly:

P.S.
Thanks for the replies! is300zx is an authority on bichirs!
