I recently aquired 6 juvie freddies. After less than 24 hours in the tank 1 was dead and another died the next day due to agression, that has been the only losses thusfar but the two smaller ones have shredded tails. My question is is there any way to visually determine the sex of these fish? the two largest and one of the smaller ones have a bright yellow/gold color, and the other smaller one is darker and has vertical bars. I will try and post pics all I have is my phone camera so I will try and get individual pics. Any input is great

Thanks
Casey

You might want to worry about keeping the rest of them alive instead of the sex. There seems to be one that doesnt play well with others.

its been two days with no more deaths so I figure it was teritory issues that have been hashed out since the deaths happened the night they were put in the tank. I want to figure out how to sex them so I can tell what I have so I can find a pair and pull the rest out anyway hence negating the problems with the " one that dosent play well". I know there may be agression issues and that isnt the point of the thread I am wondering if there are any visual clues between the sexes. Not trying to be confrontational just looking for some insight.

yeah I read about the markings in the finnage was just wondering if there was something else. I will try and get pics with my phone tomorrow of the individuals

Males have spots olong their underside from the throat back.

because my this fish shares my last name (Friedrich), I hate to see it misspelled.

It appears that in Jimmy's pic, the one on the right is the male. Not only does it have spots on the underside, but the pattern extends into the fins.

ok I see what your are saying about the spots and the pattern extending into the fins now. I will have to sit and watch my fish more closley now. I will try and get decent pics of them (my camera on my phone wasnt cutting it) and see what u guys think they are.

I wonder how accurate a way to sex these fish that is. Because my female jag has pattern all the way through her fins. And my freddy (unsexed) has no pattern on the fins but has spots under the the jaw.

I know the juvies I have its really hard to tell if they have the pattern transfering into the dorsal, what I can see is that three of the four look to have a different color pattern within the scales which looks like speckeling starting to come through, and one looks to have a solid uniform yellow gold body color. I think my best bet is going to be to keep them all to early adulthood and cull the two I dont want to keep.
