Hi guys I have a large pair of red motaguense and they have spawned for me ONE time in a 265g community, but now I've moved them into their own 150g and would like to try spawning again. Do you parachromis have any tips on the ideal parameters for spawning these big guys? The water is super clean and super filtered the temp is around 74-76 F. Should I add some silver dollars or something? Terracotta pots? Just large flat rocks? Feed them special foods?:) in for info, thanks

Adam,

Turn the temps up some. 80's always get my Parachromis in the mood. Guess your not selling them huh? Let me know when you do want to let them hit the road finally. BTW if you do get them to spawn there are more than a few guys up here in DC myself included that would love fry/juvies so don't give up on spawning them.

Thanks Drew,

Sounds good I'll up the temp and cycle that water through.

I decided to keep them they are just way too cool of a fish and like you said, they are harder to find of the parachromis. I want to distribute some fry they are excellent specimens

I have had a bit of success using rain water, just after a storm for managuense and motaguense.
I collect a rain barrel full after a storm, heat it up to about 3-5 degrees lower than the normal tank temp over night, and do a 50% water change pumping in the rain water.

I believe the drop in barometer, and new softer water has been a spawning trigger. My normal tap water has a pH of just under 8 and has an alkalinity of @100ppm, so these rain water changes are quite different than the norm.
