Ok so is the pacu a piranha? I have a red belly pacu and I'm wondering if they are piranhas or not 100% the only big difference is tht the pacu is on the slight side of a herbivore but not entirely and tht the teeth is different? And yes I am fully aware of the size and I am aware I have to upgrade to a monster tank

Pacus and piranhas share the same taxonomy only to the sub-family. Genus and species are completely different. The only real resemblance is mildly visible. Physiologically, the two are exceedingly different.

Kingdom:

Animalia

Phylum:

Chordata

Class:

Actinopterygii

Order:

Characiformes

Family:

Characidae

Subfamily:

Serrasalminae

After the above, they part ways.

I saw the scenario once before. Eventually the Oscar went to lip lock and lost its bottom jaw. Not a pretty picture.

Lol exactly. I have seen people keep a single red with a pair of oscars though. The rbp kept its distance.

I've noticed the last couple times someone has asked for a pacu or piranha identification they've used the term "pacu piranha". I'm not use to this term on these boards (after avoiding the fish areas for a couple years). When did this happen and could it be part of the confusion with labeling? I can see verbal communication getting muddy by both terms being tossed out there to buyers

It's cause by LFS, 1 of my LFS keep telling pacu is a piranha because it's easier to sell those pacu with the name "piranha" for newbies!

A Pacu is most definitely NOT a piranha.

To be honest, I think it is a shame that these Pacu are sold in pet stores without providing the proper information.
