Can someone help me figure out what the heck my two Pacus are doing? They are constantly circling around each other and rubbing into each other, one more so than the other. I know they cant be fighting because they do that once in a while and chase each other. I also don't think they would be trying to breed either because they are too young, they are about 4-5 inches. I bought them together and they were the only two Pacus in the store tank since they arrived in shipment. I don't know how to sex them so if anyone can help me with some knowledge on these guys it would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking foward to hearing if these two are really that much in love with each other because honestly its quite cute how they are together. ;-) Thanks.

If they were fighting, one would be dead by now. Imo I doubt that 4-5" is too small for breeding. If they have significant change in color, especially turning black, could be a sign of mating. Any pics?

I have seen a lot of pacu fights start like that.

I would suggest having more fish at that size, although they are approaching the size where they become violently solitary IMO.

Coming from the guy that raised over 50 pacu one summer to 10"+

Thanks guys, I'm hoping they are going to be a breeding pair. They haven't changed much since I got them, no damaged fins or scrapes of any kind so its not really aggression, hopefully it stays that way. They are the only fish that size (not including bottom dwellers) in the tank so far they are dominate but never harass any other fish. As far as their colors, one has more red on the belly than the other and one is a bit fatter.

Pacus play like that.. they enjoy all the games and love to be in a group... so i wouldn't worry about any fighting.. try and introduce new foods to them as they grow...tiny bits of raw carrots that they can chew..little pieces of zucchini and tiny pieces of grapes are all some of the foods they love... because yours are small yet make sure the food bites match enough for them to chew.. as they grow you will be able to hear them chewing and crunching as they have teeth almost like ours.. i would not think that you will ever be able to breed them as they will grow enormous and need so much space for breeding etc.. mine were 8 years old when they passed by accidental short in wire from them splashing.. so enjoy the little ripples of current they create now... because the tidal waves of action will be activated as they mature and become the size of turkey platters.. these are my favorite fish and I miss them......

Great write up Liz...Do you think you will ever get any more pacu?
