Here's a photo of the damage done to the thermometer in our pond. I've learned the hard way to cover cords with PVC, but I honestly thought this plastic thermometer would be safe... you learn something new every day, I guess. There also used to be a little loop on the top that you put the string through. Only fish are 3 Pacu and an RTC, and these teethmarks definitely point to Pacu...

woah! pretty cool. I think they do like to play around with objects in the tank. I once saw a Pacu playing with the thermometer at my LFS, but it was glass so it didn't do much damage.

awesome yeah but will the pvc stop it from warming up the pond

I'm not sure what you mean. The pumps still warm the pond, because 5,000 gallons per hour moving through a piece of 2 inch PVC makes a lot of friction! The problem with the cords is that the Pacus chew them, and other than being unsafe, it ruins the pumps! Luckily, they did this on our first round of cheap, low-GPH pumps, and when we put the new ones in, we covered the entire part of the cord that's submersed with PVC. They're crazy chewers.

mine once swallowed a piece of the plastic.. pass through .. was lodged in the rectum half in and half out.. had an infection brewing.. took him out of the tank.. and pulled it out.. put him back and he was fine.. pacus are always in trouble.. but they sure are fun.

Oh goodness now I'm worried. We never actually found the little plastic loop. I guess I'm going to do some Pacu butt-gazing tonight! LOL thanks for the tip, though.

oh sorry if i have you worried now.. but yes.. it is possible.. just keep a eye out.. maybe it fell somewhere into substrate.. i hope all is okay,

We figured it fell into the gravel, and it's such a large area that we couldn't see it with a flashlight. But we will be on the lookout. I'll just shine a light on each of them and make sure nothing's stuck.
