so when i do long road bike rides on the road bicycle or surfing and such i have a little knee pain and some neck and shoulder stuff just from all the years of these type of sports.Normally i take some advil or motrin before and it helps. What do you think it does as far as limiting my strength if at all.Anti-inflammatory right,so does that effect my muscles in a bad way as far as strength or endurance. also i may have a cup of coffee an hour or so before along with lots of water to stay hydrated but i just cant take energy drinks and such. The coffee does fine but out side of being a diuretic, what other bad effects can it have if any pre workout.:)

The only ill affects ibuprofin (active ingredient in advil and motrin) has is liver damage with long term abuse. In terms of hurting your endurance, it really shouldn't - unless you've already got liver problems that you're unaware of (high enzyme count being released into the blood, from natural anomalies such as fatty liver disease can cause severe agitation when taking anti inflammitory's, increasing the release of enzymes and fatiguing the body).

I would suggest taking Bayer instead, it has a more analgesic effect instead of anti-inflammatory and helps to dialate your blood vessels so that your muscles can push lactic acid out easier - which is the most common cause for muscle soreness after a work out in some one who's accustomed to that type of work out. If taken in moderation (i.e. no more than 500 MG every few days) it is actually beneficial, according to most studies.

well my docs had me taking lots of ibuprofin and it helps my neck.So the bayer will still help with the neck pain if its inflamed just in a different way.Bayer is asprin right, isnt that worse on your gut?Speaking of the acid,i rode 40 miles the other day great, then 30 miles 2 days later and today i rode only 20 .My legs felt fully recovered and my diets been good but my legs were just wanting to give out after only 10 miles. The 40 the other day was ended because i didnt want to over do it and get injured.I need to focus on some better pre workout meals and get the timing better.Ive always done weight training but now the endurance is in full gear i need to adjust and fine tune.Im curious on the bayer.

Load up on more carbs the night before and avoid meats the night before...

Bayer won't have any adverse effects to your stomach if you're only taking one pill at a time.

Abusing ibuprofin will cause fatty liver disease, cerosis, ulcers, constipation ect...

It takes about 72 hours, assuming you're properly hydrated and eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, for an athletes muscles to get back into top shape.

You were probably experiencing fatigue for multiple reasons.

I've got 3 13 inch screws in my hip, shrapnel all over the place, fatty liver disease, ulcers ect. from overusing ibuprofin for pain. It's not worth it, and now I'm pretty much forced to suck it up. You need to be saving your body right now for when you get older and things really do get painful, rather than just uncomfortable.

SUCK IT UP!! :D
:p:grinno:yeah i have been for too long, lol.all my old injuries are becoming new freinds.I have some lymph node problems on the left side of my neck and some pain in the back that gets real bad at times. The docs are still trying to figure out what it is.The nodes were not a size to biopsy and i was supposed to go back and gett another cat scann 2 months ago but i just cant take the waiting for results and stuff it drives me nuts.Im going back next week i think. But between that and the old haunting creaks and crackles i try to suck most of it up,lol.I dont like taking stronger meds but i do like to take the edge off enough to still enjoy the sports.I can surf all day and be fine and then the next week ill sneez real hard and toss my back out.:irked::)

It sounds like you're talking out of your pay grade. Ibuprofen is a type of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID). It is a common effect of these types of drugs to cause increased liver enzyme. Increased liver enzyme sometimes suggests liver damage. However, one is a sign of the other, they are not the same thing. Furthermore, your suggestion of "Bayer" over Ibuprofen on the basis of reduced risk of liver damage is absurd. Aspirin is known to react very strongly with many common drugs, prescription or otherwise, including alcohol.

So, in conclusion for the person who started the thread, over the counter NSAID's are not all created equal. Ibuprofen is indicated more for situations where there is inflammation (swelling). Aspirin is also indicated for swelling, unless there are other factors such as alcohol consumption. (wikipedia)

Please don't take this to be anything other than informative. Please call your doctor instead of asking an online fish forum. I just didn't want the misinformation in the other post to make up your mind for you.

ASK YOUR DOCTOR OR A PHARMACIST THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES ALLOWED TO GIVE YOU ANY ADVICE ON THE MATTER!!!!!! EVEN IF ITS AN OVER THE COUNTER DRUG!!!!!

I'll be the first to say I'm not a Doctor, I've got a medical background in that I worked in hospitals as a combat medic (essentially a nurse) for a few years and have an EMT-P, which means a whole lot of nothing when it comes down to giving out real advice.

What I've put up here is based around my own personal experience, and what G.I. has told me based around having a bad liver due to excessive amounts of acetaminophen and ibuprofin/motrin when I was in the military.

Thanks to nopain for your post and info,DBS i know where your comming from and i take your advice like you say, being based on your experience and thats what i was going for here.To nopain,i do talk to the docs. The main question in the thread is if these pain killers would minimize my workouts somehow.Dont worry,if someone in a thread tells me to take something i dont just run out and buy it with out research.Dbs is a regular here and one of the good guys around that will help when he can with a humble atitude. He wouldnt try to stirr anyone wrong. Its ironic you have one post and its in my painkiller thread and your name is nopain, lol.I bet this is onion or someone messing with us,lol.

I think it's an issue of you not hydrating and loading up on carbs before a work out, and resting properly Jason. The fatigue probably doesn't come from the medications.
