I'm getting close to the point where I'm ready to apply the finish to my new stand. For all my previous stands I've stained and finished with a few coats of polyurethane but for this project I think I'm going to go with paint. I've never painted a stand before so I have a couple of questions:
The stand is built from poplar and I want to have a quality furniture grade finish on it but I also want it to be somewhat waterproof in case of accidental spills. I've heard that Zissner Primecoat is a good primer that gives a nice finish on poplar, but I don't know if it provides any waterproofing. I know a lot of people use Kilz to waterproof the insides of stands, but I don't know if it gives you a nice painted finish. Any thoughts on which primer/paint combo would provide the best compromise?
I'm thinking of maybe using 2 coats of Zissner Primecoat for the outside visible surfaces followed by a couple of coats of dark brown latex paint, and using 2-3 coats of Kilz on the inside where the sump is going to be followed by a few coats of white latex. It would probably be more convenient if I could just use one primer product for the whole thing.
