Ok so I know Krylon Fusion is the recommended paint for use with aquariums, but why? What is the actual type (i.e. acrylic etc) of paint that is water safe? The reason I ask is I'm working on something that will require a little more detail than I can get with spraypaint. Also is this paint safe under the water rather than just in contact with it? I've been beating my head against a wall trying to figure out how best to proceed in my project.

Krylon fusion is fine under water as long as you let it fully cure before putting it in the tank.

Good to know. The first piece of my puzzle is done. Now I still need to figure out if theres a paint not in a spray can that is as safe. I really dont feel like spraying into a cup and then trying to scavenge whats wet with a brush.

Just curious are you painting a background or items to place in the aquarium?

i've always just painted the outside back of my tanks so they match the wall color they are placed against. Use the same paint as I paint the wall with. Works great.

I will be painting things to go in the tank. I'm essentially looking to build a 3d background, but not exactly. I'll put a thread up about the project itself when I start on it, which I hope will be this weekend.

Krylon Fusion is designed to bond to plastics and be used outdoors, hence the reason we use it.

If there are enough Fusion colors, just spray some in a cup (baby food jars are great) and use a brush, but it does dry fast.

Krylon has got the market on this type of paint.

Acrylics, enamels & epoxy paints once dry are aquarium safe but don't always bond well.
