I've got a Rubbermaid ag vat with a half dozen painted turtles in it.....

Girlfriend just called me here at work and said there's a half dozen little eggs in various spots in the vat.

Can anyone offer me up some advice in regards to how to hopefully get these things to hatch?

Hopefully someone here can help! ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

How were the eggs found? Were they laid in the water? Are the eggs in good shape and not dented?

I've hatched this species before but in an outdoor setting.

Check if they were laid on land or in the water. If they were laid in the water then take them and throw them out. If they are on land then take them and gently take them straight from where you found them. Mark the top with a felt tip marker. Then dont move the egg at all and place it in dirt or sand in a bucket. Then put a heat lamp over it. Monitor humidity and temperature. That is the cheapest and easiest way to do it, or you can buy an incubator or make your own. Best advice for this would be to look on the internet

Did that yesterday......

Thanks.

For lizard and turtle eggs not using an incubator use a 5 gallon bucket filled with vermiculite or sand. Vermiculite works the best, I fill the bucket 3/4 with vermiculite soak vermiculite until saturated, drain rest of water off, place eggs about a third buried in vermiculite, cover bucket with something solid to hold in humidity, keep temp around 78 - 82. You dont want eggs to be wet but you do want humidity around 90%. I perfer incubators, but bucket will work as long as temperature and humidity are monotored. If an eggs molds or discolors take it out. Hope this helps Jeff

They were laid on a big platform of driftwood, so hoping they have a chance, but not holding my breath.

They're in a container with moist dirt, inside a styro box. Dug out a heat rock w a thermostat but the stupid thing doesn't work, might try a small aquarium heater in a bowl of water. Just been using heat packs on the other side of the styro box to keep them warm.

Should have vermiculite today, but will have to hunt for something to monitor humidity.

Thank you guys for the replies.

Pretty much the girlfriends project, she found them, moved them, did the research, and is caring for them. I'm plenty busy slaving to all our fish...... :nilly:
