Hi everyone

Does anyone know if it's possible to paint the wood trim of a tank? If so, what's the best way to do it? I just recently stained the stand on my new tank and I would like the wood trim to match the color of it. I tried applying stain on it directly but I don't think it works. The trim seems to be a laminate. I was thinking of buying some moldings and staining it but I was wondering if there's an easier way to do it.

I'd appreciate any suggestions/help. Thanks in advance! :)

Here's the picture of the tank and stand as of today.

I use rustoleum Black gloss paint on all my tanks w Great results!

The stain won't work on the tank trim. You can try a laminate or go with the other suggestions (color of your choice of course).

Thanks guys!

I'll try sanding the trim. Hopefully the stain will work on it. If not, maybe I'll just buy a molding and glue it to the trim.

I'll post pics when it's done. :)

If it's a standard tank (aqueon, all-glass, marineland, perfecto, etc...), it's not real wood. It's a plastic trim that looks like wood.

Sanding and staining isn't going to do anything. And stain is just going to rub off.

You have 2 options:
-Paint it whatever color you want (I like Krylon Fusion)
-Glue on real wood trim over it (Stained to your preference)

No idea if this would work, but how about trying some of that iron on edging veneer stuff. People use it cover unfinished edges of woodwork. Not sure how well it would adhere to plastic but may be worth a shot?

Yeah, I've heard of that veneer edging. I was actually supposed to get one but I was told that I can't stain it. The only method I've researched so far is using a wood molding then stain it before gluing it to the current trim.

Thanks though. :)
