I have a multi level acrylic unit (Clarity Plus Bio-Retailer) and have been thinking about painting the bottom of each level to help the inhabitants (currently none but will be housing breeder clownfish and clownfish fry) feel more at ease. I want to paint the outer side of the bottom piece of acrylic on each level so it will not be constantly wet but it will have water splashed from time to time from the level below and I'm sure evaporation will also cause it to never really be dry.
My question is...What kind of paint would be best for this? I am looking for a balance of something that will tolerate constant humidity and occasionally being splashed but also won't damage the acrylic...any ideas???

Spray paint can etch into plastic/acrylic...

Standard household latex paint will adhere to acrylic fairly well and will not etch into it...

Outdoor grade latex paint will be just as safe and will hold up to humidity quite well...

The effect of excessive humidity will result in the endges peeling. It will not 'liquify' the paint. Paint that does peel off and falls in the water will be inert (read as non harmful to your fish or your ecosystem).
