So I'm working on building a divider from egg shell crating but plan to us it as a back ground when not used to divid the tank. Would prefer it to not be such a bright color as white. And idea on how to make it like a grey color? Any tank safe paints?

Unfortunately I can't suggest a paint but I can suggest an alternative way to camouflage the divider so it can also be used as a background. With some tie wraps and some plastic vines used for home decor you can create a nice fake plant background/ divider out of the crate. When it's used as a divider it'll also serve as a secondary visual barrier for the fish perhaps decreasing stress due to aggression. As a background it'll add color and a place for fish to hide.

Funny, that's actually the other 1/2 of the plan. Weave vines into it and also put some bubble tubes on the sides. Thought about making them attached to the tank but I'm still on the fence about that (like have them be swinging dividers that are on the back and then swing like a door into the dividing position). Just looking to go the extra mile to make sure it's perfect with changing its color.
