I hear of people doing this. Is it better than a background? What kind of paint is it?

I haven't heard of very much ppl doing this mainly because of the work, all the paint and the specific paint because if it has certain odors they can get sucked up in the pump and they can become toxic to fishes. And normally if not careful it can come out a horrible job (but that depends on how talented you are) also after years of it just being on there it can start to chip off.

But if you can find safe paint and your up to it then go ahead.

Members of AC suggest Krylon Fusion for this purpose.

i just roll on the cheapest acrylic i can get. have done it to filled and empty tank with no adverse affects. i just like it better than a background because it doesn't get watered spotted and stuff.

You can paint the outside of the back sides and bottom of the tank with latex paint and a roller. Not that its better, its cheaper and easier to deal with than those paper backgrounds.Ive sprayed too but it takes a few coats.

backgrounds are prettier and u can change them out whenever u want..... paint ur kinda a one horse kinda guy!

prettier to you, uglier to me. :D acrylic is very easy to scrape off and change honestly...

If you're up in the air about painting go to Walmart and get some static cling window tint. If you like that on the tank you'll love it painted. ALL my glass tanks are painted.... Looks wayyyy better than any background in my opinion. I just used plain ol black latex paint.
