Just saw a thread regarding painting the back of an aquarium. I was wondering if I can paint the back of my tank while it is cycling? I am in my 2nd week of fishless cycling and I would like to paint the future backside of my glass aquarium black. Its presently full of water so I would have to paint the front that will be the back after I do 100% water change after the cycling ends.

Does the gas coming out of the paint affect the bacteria at all?

ok first of all why are you gonna do 100% water change after cycling? second it is unwise to paint back of tank whilst there is water as you are likely to contaminate the water. also the fumes rise and i doubt they would enter the water. but the paint itself may.

What "gas" comes out of paint ?? Paint has solvents, that yes, MAY contaminate your water, but your not going to make any paint/water contact as you paint the outside of the glass not the inside. The paint odor/vapors will not effect your water as long as they do not come into contact. And truthfully........It probably wouldnt matter if it did.

I'm doing fishless cycling. What percentage of water change do you suggest before adding some hardy fish?

If the hardier fish survives a couple of days, that's when I'll add maybe a couple of dats or a jardini.

I painted the back of the tank and it does not come into contact with the paint. I was trying to describe the solvent and any gas.

Great reply and straight to the point. thanks.

Use the press on sticky backgrounds that you can get at that fish place / that pet place......You can use your mag float with that but not with a painted background.........:D

I'm already done painting it. I painted it 4 coats of flat black. As a precautionary measure, I used latex paint so removing it once I got tired of it would be easier.
