I'm wanting to get back into cichlids after not having mine for a while since they were bullying my catfish (and nobody messes with my catfish :)) so instead if being stupid like last time and housing a pair of cutteri in my 75 gallon cat tank I want to breed a pair in their own tank. Once my yellow perch outgrow the 20 tall (24"x12"x16") they're in it will be open for stocking. I know that's pretty small for most cichlids but I know something will fit in it. I like kribs, rams, apistos, etc but that's not the type of fish I'm after for this tank. I'd like to do something like Amatitlania, Cryptoheros, Cichlasoma, etc that is harder to breed than cons yet not so difficult I need to do things such as adjust photo periods. I really like red ceibals but I've heard they need at least a 40B which I can understand for an 8" fish. Another option outside the tall bodied cichlids I was talking about before that I'm considering are Electric Blue Acaras. I already have a female in my 30 tall display tank and she's a great colorful fish, not only that but I'm sure fry would go for decent money. Feel free to suggest any other alternatives as well. What cichlids would go best in this tank?

Tank is to small for the fish you want.. Might be able to get away with a pair of cons in there. Why don't you just use the 75 g you have. You can do much more with it

I wouldn't keep most cichlids, even dwarf cichlids, in a 20 gallon. You could probably get away with a pair of rams and some dithers. The issue is not with the size of the fish, but their potential aggression toward one another when spawning. I've had dwarf cichlids slaughter their mates when kept alone in 20 gallon tanks. I've found I have more success with a larger tank and small, peaceful dithers to give the pair something to chase after and protect their fry from.

Definitely a no-go on acaras, Cichlasoma, Cryptoheros, etc. A 20 gallon is really too small even for non-breeding adults of these types in most cases, unless you're keeping them as a single wet pet.

75 currently is my catfish tank which are priority for me and once the cats in it outgrow it I might consider a pair of cichlids but I'll probably go with my original idea of a large native stream community.

Hmm, darn. I'll have to wait until I pick up another 30 long for under for other one. I'll just use that tank for Bantam Sunfish then probably since they only get 4" and breed similar to cichlids.

It would be easier if it were a 20L or 29g.... but if you want to make a few bucks off the fry and be able to use the 20H how about Africans? Right now there has been quite a bit of interest in Shell dwellers and the resale on the fry has been good. Granted that is probably not what you wanted since you posted under the Central/SA section, but you did ask for suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion but to me it just seems like shell dwellers are kind of bland, color wise and even the decor tiu house with them. Not all of them but a lot IMO. Still cool fish just not what I'm looking for.
