1st off, hi i am new to this forum... i have been reading lots of info on here without joining up! but can tell that you know your stuff! as you can probably guess my question is regarding electric blue jack dempseys (ebjd) i have a 175 gall tank that has only these 2 fish they are about 2 inches grown out a little in a smaller tank from 1 inch... but another tank had fry so they had to be moved to there larger tank a bit early, there is also a large common plec... he is about 11 inches in the tank with them, i was wondering about tank mates... a long shot, but was thinking about dwarf cichlids (not sure what types) or some peacocks (again not sure what types) with some giant danios (5 or 7) and congo tetra (5 or 7) do you think this would work out with either the dwarfs or the peacocks and if so with either 1 what types should i go for? if i am living in a dream world thinking that this world work please let me know and advise on what fish to get.

Thanks alot for your time and expertise carl

EBJDs need some lax tankmates. Severums and Orange Heads come to mind. I'm not sure about the dwarf cichlids - that might be too lax and end up dead from the EBJDs. By Peacocks do you mean Africans? If so I would advise against that. Your ideas of dithirs would work either/or the giant danios or congo tetra.

I would get rid of the common pleco if possible - grow even bigger then what it's currently at and is a major poop machine.

At the size of your EBJD now, you could certainly add dwarf cichlids, but I would not go with apistos. Curviceps or other acara-type dwarf cichlids would be fine. I am raising 9 1.5" EBJD with a pair of keyholes, a curviceps, angels and tetras. My 3" EBJD is in a mixed cichlid community with some future aggressors, but they are not interested in the EBJD as of now. My large EBJDs are housed with female JDs, a school of silver dollars and four jewel cichlids (Kolente River).

ooo thanks guys... yes i do mean afican peacoks... thought it might be a no no .... as for the dwarfs i will prob have to rehome them in a few years once the ebjds get big and i would have become attached to them... (a possible excuse for a new tank :) though) Severums and jewels sound like a good mix was thinking adding 2 males and 4 females of the sevs and a male and 2 females for the jewels, with both the congos and giant danios, would this be over stocked or will that be ok?

when you say orange heads do you mean Geophagus or some other type?

I have some smaller CA cichlids in with my EBJD (and a reg JD). My EBJD is still small, but he doesn't bother anyone. The smaller species in there are Herotilapia multispinosa (rainbow cichlid) and Cryptoheros cutteri.
