the rock...671!!!
i have 2 pairs of convicts.I'm trying to breed them, they were paired in different tanks at the store so i bought them and put them in a 20gal with a seperator in the middle. they got along with there mates at the store and the first couple days at my house.but now it seems like the pairs don't like who there with. the big male keeps hanging out at the seperator and on the other side the other female hovers near him. they don't got near their original paired mates. should i just remove the seperator to repair them? of just give it some time?

They young generation dont mate for life but like to play around.

What's the separator for?
I have 20 convicts and 3 JDs in a 30g and the convicts keep breeding.

Sometimes they will break up for a couple of days or even over a week, generally they tend to get back together without a problem. I noticed mine would start fighting the fry was removed to early.

Just make sure there is enough room and hiding places for one to escape the dominant one.

20 gallon is too small for tankmates with a pair of Convicts in there. This is also the reason why I dislike people keeping pairs in 10 gallon, once they start fighting there is no room to run.

20 Convicts AND 3 Jack Dempseys in a 30 gallon?! Are they fry? I just do not see adult cichlids staying in a small tank like that without killing each other off.

i was worried about the fry being attacked by the other convict pair, that's why i have the seperator up. should i just take it out? they have lots of caves and plants to hide from the big male, he's attacking everyone now...i don't think he remembers who is original mate was. guess i'll give them more time

They are between 1" and 3". For now they don't seem to fight a lot. Addmittingly, I don't spend my day watching them though. Once I saw a 3" JD trying to get behind the rock where convicts keep their eggs, but the 1' convicts stood his ground.

give it some time. they will breed eventually

mine get in a tiff from time to time, but they always make up and I've got about 300 fry in another 2 weeks. I just let mom and dad eat 'em. I only have 4 convicts in my 30, and they spar all the time, I don't understand how Shekes' aren't all dead! I guess they just like gettin' freaky :o)
