I found a pair of Convicts, but I found a better male at another store. Is it possible to just get the female and a different male to breed?

shouldn't be too difficult. the only time I had trouble pairing up cons was with my first male. he spawned with a pink female who died not long after they spawned. I tried to pair him with a striped female and he wouldn't have it so I had to get another pink female and he paired up with her. 
for the most part though, cons aren't too picky about their mates.
