Hi, this is my first thread on MFK. Lots of good stuff here. I have five rtm juvies in a 6' 125gal. I also have a 4" male JD, two small Bristlenose and two 5" Syn. Angelicas in there. It has become apparent, that I have two female rtms (1-1/2") and 3 males(2-3"). My first ? is, should I remove two of the males? Yes, I would be choosing the male, but I'm thinking it would be less stressful to have only one male chasing the girls. If the opinion is to take two out, it leads to the other ?. One male is the boss, at over 4 times the body mass of his male siblings. Do I remove the sub-dominants? Has anyone grown out two male Parachromis in separate tanks, one with the biggest male fry, and a small one in the other? How do they compare at adulthood? Does the biggest most aggressive male of all the fry necessarily turn out to be the best looking, best father material? I admit, that in the past, I have re-homed the biggest, most aggressive male cichlid. This had been recommended to me many years ago by a breeder. He claimed the second in line was a better choice. Since I knew no better, I believed him, and have always done it. Maybe I have missed out on some awesome fish. I welcome all opinions on this and on keeping the other fish listed in the tank, and of putting a female JD in. Thank you!

It's up to you on whether or not you want to keep the ones with the best color, temperament, or size. If they're not beating on each other to the point where you're seriously worried about one making it or not, I'd leave them in there to grow a good bit more before deciding on keepers.

I have separated 4 dovii into 2 pairs in separate tanks, the two smallest in one and the two largest in another. The two smaller ones definitely started to catch up in growth, I'm assuming because they were the sub dominants in the tank and were then able to get more food. It's another option, albeit more work and money to run another tank.
