I was wondering about when you get a mating pair of cichlids, are these pairs permanent or do the males tend to mate with other females if they are available.

I have a pair of JD's that bread (sadly all the eggs got eaten) and I still have two other females that I am not sure if I should keep or not. I would probably prefer to sell them so that I have more space.

So, is mating for life/single partners...or are the males players?

i ll tell u something i know about convict ..

i do not know the same with JD or no ..

if u have a pair in a tank and another pair in a tank next to them and the see each other ...

the male from pair ( A ) can love the female of pair ( B ) and they swim together which cause the male of pair ( A ) kill his female to get to the female ( B ) .. that i know about them and i had many accidents like that if i counted to u how many females i lost cause of that u ll get bored .. even a male convict can breed with 2 females in same tank .. and i am not breeding convict anymore now i used to but now no cus it's price went down and i ll lose so i collected all my pairs of the farm in one tank there were a pair with the biggest male i have in my farm and he had breed several times before with his female .. and so when i added the last white female ( was single i took her from a friend of me ) the male left her female and paired with the white one .. and now his female is hiding behind the filter cus she is the only single now :D

so what i mean is give it a try and u ll now but keep ur eyes open in order not to lose any female ..

^ Thanks for the reply :)

Still unsure what to do. I know while the pair were breeding there were lots of fights between the male and my other two females. I was planning on giving them away, but then someone said that I should keep them because he might breed with them, then other people said other things so I am slightly confused.

My other two females are very pretty ladies so I don't want them to die.

How bad a shape are the other females? If anything keep them until another spawn happens just incase he changes his mind on his mate.

They are fine now, I have separated the couple already. Lost their spawn, but I have put them into a 15g. They are roughly 3 inches so they seem to fit fine there for now. My bf had to help me get them out as I pulled out my back on Saturday, so they are staying in there till another spawn. Hopefully that won't take long.

But I have two other females in my main tank. See my original plan was to get a breeding pair and then get rid of the extras. But if I have a higher success with them around then MAYBE I'll keep them.
