So today i got the bright idea to put a palm tree husk in my aquarium. Reason being that i need more hiding spots and shelter for my fish. I'm just not sure if its safe or not. My main concern is the oils in the wood and what not. Has anybody tried this? or have any input?

It is believed to be safe for lizards and birds. That's out of water, though. But considering birds may well eat the wood and be okay, you're on the safer side. Just boil it until the water is clear and you should be good to go.

Good enthusiasm, but you might be boiling for a few days here...

boil it for 1 minute to kill anything and your done. we often used to put banana leaves in with south american fish upon new arrivals to the store where I used to work (they are often shipped with banana leaves in the bags).

its good shelter. I can't see why a palm husk could possibly do any damage to your fish or tank.

Unless his water has no buffering capacity and this piece of wood releases enough tannins to crash his tank. If it's a little piece of wood in a big tank, you're fine as suggested. But if this is for a little tank smaller than say 20 gallons, boil the crud out of it for insurance. Can't hurt.

its a 100 gallon tank, and only 1 piece of husk about 12 inches long, 10 inches wide. So ive been boiling since i first posted, exchanged the water 3 times, and im about to put it in. Im stoked! thanks alot guys

It worked awesome guys! I was even able to form it into a tunnel while boiling it. It looks awesome in the tank and i would definately recommend it to anyone who needs good shelter for a nocturnal fish. Here's some pictures!
