Does anyone have any pictures of the Palmas Palmas? I just got my two weeksii and two palmas palmas home but.... I'm not 100% that the ones sold as palmas palmas aren't actually buettekoferi. Are there any key differences I could check for? I'll post pics once I get them settled in.

i dont think anyone knows 100%. this question wanders into the territory of the palmas complex, and from what i have read... is very complex:nilly:

the picture bellow depicts what i believe Toyin has been selling them as. the larger pic is what he calls palmas palmas and the inset smaller pic is the p buettikoferi. most of the japanese sites call them both p buettikoferi.

but who knows for sure?

here is another pic of the palmas palmas. and i remind you this is just my opinion not fact.

Here are the new fish, including the ones in question. I'm sure their colors will darken in a few days - shipping shock still has them. It was amazing - these 4 were absolutely starving. Ate like pigs within an hour of coming out the bag.

These two are about six inches - one of them ate 5 big silversides.... stole them from other fish. Thinking about calling them Lady and Tramp.

Note the blue eyes on the Palmas... The smaller one has both eyes like that, and the larger has one blue one normal. They're cloudy, and remind me a lot of cataracts. Any recommendations?

N OOOHh yea the weeksii's have little horns :) A bit smaller than a half inch, curved downward. Too cool.

Here is a pic of a Buttifokkeri: LOL

great looking fish! how big are they? cool external gills on the weeksii.

i agree with xrayz. the larger pic in his first image and the 2nd image are what toyin calls palmas palmas. the smaller inset in the 1st image is palmas buettikoferi, and that's what toyin calls it as well. and as mentioned the japaneses do call all of them p. buettikoferi.

as you can see, they have quite different markings, and you can readily tell them apart. From my own observation, their dorsal pattern are also different, consistent with what the Aqualog author said. But to be honest, it's still a mystery. i follow toyin and call it palmas palmas since to me it looks different enough, but i also accept the possibility that it could be a p.buettikoferi locale variant.

there are no confirmed pics of palmas palmas that i've seen, not even on japanese books/websites. there are pics of some of mine in this link...don't know if you've seen them.

edit: saw that the weeksii are 6". how big are the other two? oh and about the cloudy eye, keep water clean and try some salt/melafix/pimafix and see if it gets better.

to my amazement I saw in my LFS that they had 3 (all different sizes) of P.palmas/buett. They've been there weeks but I only noticed them because the bloke was cleaning the tank & they were out. They normally hide & stay in pvc pipes.
Now for question-how active are these fellas? My tank with Del & Senagal has no pipes so they are out all the time. I'd love to get 1 or 2 of these polys but not if they never come out. Observations from anyone?
