I have been kicking around the idea of building a paludarium. My idea is to build an enclosure on top of my 6' tank. Lets say build it like a canopy but it will have a 2.5' x 6' viewing window with the hinges at the very top so I can lift the entire front viewing panel for feeding/maint. etc. I want to use oak so it matches my stand. It will be wood on all sides less the front. I think I will use some kind of pondliner liquid or the later on the bare wood and then build all the features on a water proof surface. Maybe making the back of the "canopy" about 4-6"s deeper than the depth of my tank so I can have a shelf to build on to support the weight of possibly using real rock. I have been reading about how to construct one with foam, coco coir and of coarse live plants. I may use some real rock instead of foam built rocks. Foam will still play a roll in tieing rocks together. Sticking with my them as of now it would house all SA native plants. Maybe a water fall of some sort which could be just a lil trickler or a decent flowing stream. Some concerns I have been facing are how to make the water to land look decent with having my background painted black. I dont want it to look fake when it makes the transition. I also plan on disguising the tank supports with rock or driftwood roots so I can have roots coming from the top of the tank into the water. With having a deep water feature under this thing could I house any kind of tree frog? I thought of chameleons but I quickly disregarded the idea because they cant swim. Im still not sold on the idea of tree frogs for the same reason. But I would think with there constant living in foliage they wouldnt be to keen to end up in the water. But im not sure...I havnt got that far yet. Does anybody have a link to something similar that I can look at? Tips, ideas and criticism welcomed!
