After doing a lot more research, its seems there are a lot of people in my area selling 55g tanks for extremely cheap... 20-40 dollars. im thinking of a good idea, and start collecting Pan fish caught in the area i.e. bluegill, crappie, warmouth, and maybe a couple more. my question here, what would be the max amount of these fish to go into a 55g? they only get to be around 10" if im correct.

the 'gills and crappie get much bigger - records on both are in the 4-5lb range.

I had a red-ear, punkinseed, & red-breasted in a 55 gallon for a while. They got along pretty well but the punkinseed was the most aggressive one in the tank and occasionaly chased the other two. They are kind of like cichlids and are territorial. Make sure you have some rocks or driftwood for them to hide behind. When they got to a larger size I put them in my outdoor pond.

Bluegill, definately not, They can get over a foot and they're MEAN.

Just my opinion, but I think your best bet would be a few pumpkinseed and a few green sunfish. Pumpkinseed are more colorful than the others anyway. Green sunfish are very basslike, plus they look really nice when they're adults. These are both fish that don't get massive like a bluegill and will likely max out at 8 inch at the MOST.

Make sure to put driftwood and either some fake plants (or live, though more sensitive plants may be uprooted or destroyed. I had like with valisnaria.)

I'm not sure if you have longear up there, but they seem to be more docile than the rest. If you can find them they'd probably be a better option than pumpkinseed.
I would keep less pumpkinseed than greens. IME greens will chase and posture but they aren't as purely aggressive as pumpkinseed.

Green sunfish may not look terribly interesting as juveniles, but they will grow into a very basslike fish.

I wouldn't keep more than six or seven of any of these fish in a 55g as adults.

Here's my green as a juvenile, about 2 1/2 inches long (Click for bigger):

Here's mine now:

Check out that mouth, :D

A pair is all I would recommend.

Hey shadowbass, what kind of sunfish is the orange colored one near the bottom in the 3rd picture?

That's a longear sunfish (Lepomis megalotis). Notice the big black elongated spot near the gill (though his has been injured which is why there's a small indentation), hence the name longear.

Here's a better pic:

Wow thats cool looking...wish we had those here:(

You have them up there, the distributation is just really spotty.

My family lives in Buffalo, MN, and I've seen them while up there, but I think it was while we were at their cabin and that's further north, on what lake I can't remember.

If you want something similarly colorful you can keep pumpkinseed. I've caught hundreds of them up there, I even caught one on a bare hook once while I was getting bait :screwy:
