Hey guys,

I would have the possibility to get my hands on some Panaque sp. L191 for 15€ apiece. The fish are approx. 3,5 inch in size.

I would put them in a tank (100cm x 100cm x 40cm - 100litres volume)with 28°C water temp along with 2 Jack Dempsey juveniles and 2 big sized turtles. There's plenty of driftwood and cork bark in the tank to hide and to eat. Do you think the plecos will get along with the JD's? How long will it take them to eat the whole driftwood if it's approx. 40cm long?

Sorry for the intrusion. I have a question too... I have a L191 in a 200 gals tank. He's about 4-4,5" now and a have it for 1 year. When I bought it he had around 3 inches. Is this growth rate normal? Thanks. :)

P.S. They eat a lot of bogwood but I think it's pass a long time till he'll eat your bogwood. 40cm is somethin' .. Maybe a few years with a correct diet.

100 cm? Is that like 30" or so? If so, that's WAY too small for Royals & 2 JD's. The turtles need another home regardless. Turtles eat fish. Especially stationary fish like Plecs.

I think that's normal growth, Royals do grow slow. I've got 2. 1 of them grew 3" in a year but the other one only grew about 1 3/4". They might be different sexes.

Hi Twisted Penguin,

Thanks for your input. I calculated the tank size in inch and its roughly 40" x 40" x 15" (length x width x height). In my experience the normal aquarium plecos are left unharmed, even by bigger turtles. My only concern is if the pleco will get along with the JD's since the cichlids are rather territorial and I have heard so is the Panaque. Do you have any experience with that?

It depends on the temperament of the cichlid. I've got some cichlids that are fine with Plecs and other that would pick them to death. I can't imagine putting fish in with turtles. The turtles have a HUGE bio-load. Honestly-I don't think the tank's big enough for them all.

100x100x40cm is 400 litres which is ideal for pleco's due to the huge floor space. Couldnt comment on the turtles but my dad had a JD that killed an 12" common pleco, but that was a much smaller tank, with enough wood they should be ok together.

this is always my mentality...

If the price is right.. and you have the space.. go for it.... u'll never know until you try... "within reason" of course...

I suck at metric :-) I see-so it's approx. 40" square and 15" tall? I'd still leave the turtles out.

Yep, these are the dimensions. The volume is a little more than 100gal. You are right that the tank could be small for 2 turtles, 2 JD's and the Panaque if every animal is grown out. Right now the JD's are only small (3,5" as I wrote before) and so is the Panaque. If I see that I have to change the water every few days I'll upgrade the tank.
