Has anybody heard of this name being used? If so, I'd love a reference so I can look it up. Supposedly it's Hypselecara temporalis, but have never heard this term being used for them.

Actually...its Hypselecara coryphaenoides. H. temporalis is still just plain ol' chocolate cichlid. If I had of saved the emails from a couple of exporters who were gettin them, I could reference that to you. Being deleted and all, kinda makes it difficult. Why is it so hard to accept for you though? Makes sense to me why they would be called 'Panda' Chocolate cichlids. I mean, H. coryphaenoides practically fits the description perfectly. I guess questioning everything makes things easier to accept.

nooo it's because he knows everything there is to know and even when he is wrong he will never say so. I have always known Temporalis as the Chocolate cichlid personally. Who freaking cares if somebody calls a fish a panda chocolate cichlid. I have seen panda GT's and Royal GT's but I get my panties in a bunch over it. And please don't report my post for typing what a woman's undergarment is called ;) It's a COMMON name. You can call them whatever you want!!!!! I call it a green backed brown thingy sometimes :P

Thank you ammer.

You are right - if we find something named something different, of course we want to check it out.

And as we all well know, those fish lists.... oy ! Along the lines of "royal green terror"

So the "Panda" is just a name some exporter came up with ? Has anybody ordered any under that name? Would be very interested in knowing if there was an elusive third species.

that is my guess I have not heard it before but it would not surprise me in the least to hear the name pop up from somewhere I suppose. If a distributor sells both species maybe they thought it was a good way to differentiate for people who do not know the scientific names. Just a thought

I doubt there is a third species, although there are new fish being found daily...:D. People in South America generally don't use scientific names more of less, well the collectors anyway. They normally go by common names, or pictures..haha. I'm assuming the 'Panda' is something the exporters came up with, and I have seen them for sale like that before. I think Rapps has listed them as the 'Panda' chocolates, as has Oliver. When you say Chocolate cichlid, people automatically think of temporalis...which is why i think they started callin the cory. Pandas to help clear up any confusion. Its best to just stick with scientific names though, as common names are used with such carelessness its rediculous.

yes, ridiculous indeed - That's why I never, NEVER special order from LFS - their lists are so superficial you never know what you'll get.

For example "Pink knife" or "Ghost Bass" or whatever else the heck they list LOL

But then again, that is exactly how RARE fish come into the hobby sometimes.
So, anybody order "Panda Chocolates" in the past?
