I have a 55g set up, it's current inhabitants are 2 red eared sliders, and a 21" clown knife (he came w/the tank). Once the sea monster is rehomed, I'd like to put 1 or 2 of either bluegill, or sunfish in this tank. Aside from the turtle fodder, they'd be the only fish. Eventually, the 2nd slider will get his own tank, so it'd be just 1 turtle and the 1-2 fish. Would the 55 be large enough for a 2 of either species, or should I stick to 1?

I would move both turtles to somthing larger, they get big. Most turtles do not do good with fish mine did when he was younger but not now. Then you could get away with a couple of panfish for a good while though a 75 or 125 would be ideal. You could get large rummermaid tub for the turtles its cost effective thats what i did for mine.

I had them in totes, it's hard to get enough filtration to keep them clean. I was draining and scrubbing and refilling every 2 days. And they were tacky. Hence the tank. Plus, I have yet to see a tote bigger than 54 gallons. A male can be comfortable in a 55 gallon tank, and both turts are male. RES become more herbivorous as they age, opting for more veggis and less meat. And I don't have the money or space for a bigger tank, otherwise I'd buy a 180 and keep the ck. That being said, I was hoping to have some in tank movement beyond the turtles and their school of goldfish that they refuse to eat unless they're already dead.

I had a paint, my buddy had a redear, it had an 8" shell from side to side, it demolished his fish, dragging them down, take a few bites and leave the rest. He got rid of it too, these were wild turtles.

I would get something large such as a big bluegill, crappie or something along those lones, your options are limited with the turtles.

bluegill don't belong in a 55, crappie either. nor, for that matter, do red eared sliders. an 11 inch diameter turtle will not be comfortable in a 12 inch tank. fine to start, but not as a permanent tank.
I only have second hand info but as far as the the more vegetarian diet when RES's mature are concerned, my aunt's 2 at 48 and 43 years old would probably disagree. they have a separate freezer to keep the fish they catch in the summer for the winter. they both like a 4-5 inch sunny every 2-3 days. of course they only eat 1/2 to 3/4 and won't take fillets...
