synonym is different words for the same meanings. Happens a lot with fish, when different scientific names are used to describe the same fish for one reason or another. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synonym_(taxonomy) describes it better than me. I know it as P. hypophthalmus personally. I'll move this to catfish. You have reason to be "worried"- these are big fish.

thank you for this info, just how big do they get,my pet shop sold this fish to me not nowing themselves i think ,so i will be going back to them but i need to go with the right information, ive had my fish 4 about 11mths and ive stsrted to notice a change in his manner, more aggressive in his feeding and it was this that started me worrying, and were would i put him?

without actually ID'ing the fish it's hard for anyone here to give you much in terms of acurate information... which most of us try to do to the best we can.

your tank... isn't going to work much longer no matter what sub-species it is though unfortunatly. for some extra info you are free to check this link and see if that is what you are really ready to take care of or not.
