Besides vacuuming has anyone tried or used snails to turn this sawdust into a lighter mulm ?

When the plecos where smaller the power heads would push this waste into the overflows . Now they are larger 8 to 10" the sawdust waste is quite heavy .

Tends to accumulate on the top of the sand substrate ..

Would snails process this waste any further and allow it to get into the water column ?

Don't think so. Your best bet is well placed jets/pumps to accumulate them into one corner and place a filter inlet close enough to the substrate to pick them up while not sucking in the sand.

Thank you , looks like I may have to remove the sand if I go that route. Ive got a JB WP 60 in the tank now for water flow

Want to borrow one of my MP60? Pumping 7500GPH should do the trick.

I'm going to remove what sand I have in the tank and point the power head towards the bottom of the tank . Also going to set up the 2260 instead of the fx5 as a compliment to the sump Tnx for offer

The sand gets pretty heavy after a while. The sawdust is still pretty light in comparison. Depending on the size of your tank, 2-3 smaller powerheads parallel to the sand can do the trick without disturbing the sand too much. Just need lots of trial n error.

One of the moderators iirc posted that he had a panaque that went through pounds of wood each year. (Possibly hyperbole, but I never owned one, so it could have been literally true.) I wonder what he did for that.

Could be I suppose that different wood produces different amounts of sawdust? (If that is clearly wrong, don't forget, I said I never owned one!)

I have the cleanest mopani root around thanks to these guys! Thought the density of that material would slow them down . :-)
