Papyrocrannus Congicus vs. Afer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So far...it seems like it's just the pattern. I've heard that they may be the same species, but from different locations.

There is a clear difference between the two. The color of the pattern is also different. P. afer have golden patterns while p. congoensis have just dark brown patterns. Not sure if the patterns on p. congoensis will lose the patterns as it matures as p. afer patterns start to lose the patterns at 9-12 inches. There is no such species a Papyrocranus congicus BTW. Although both still have the same definition. Most of the spots and stripes are usually located on the belly area of the p. afer while p. congoensis have small spots all over the body.

My P. Afers were well over 12in. and my gold spot still had his spots bright as ever

All my former 14" lost the patterns when they were at 12"+. some did however at 9". Maybe it depend on individual.

My P. Afer's both change color brightness when living in either a light or dark substrate. My young one used to have Beautiful contrasting markings-very visible, changed to a dark substrate, mostly black sand, and it would be difficult to differentiate between it and a normal brown knife now!

My big P. Afer (11-12"?) is getting lighter now that it is in a lighter sand bottom tank...It's all about their ninja tactics=stealth!

To the OP, P Afer is available while the Papyrocranus congoensis is near non-existent in the aquarium trade-I could only find 2 pics of the same fish when Google'd!

Toyin of Rehoboth Aquatics have P. Congoensis in stock. :D I would get some but they would end up being feeders. :grinno:

Better pics? All I have to go on is those 2 pics from Google, lol.

And my P. Afer has taken a liking to my Bowfin, we'll see how long that lasts...
