Pair would be fine In a 180

A pair of dovii in a 180 gallon aquarium? I disagree that a person can have a pair of dovii in a 180 gallon aquarium effectively, especially adults. One adult dovii is pushing the limits just in a 180 gallon aquarium, and any other fish would be obliterated.

You shouldn't be asking what the minimum tank size is, you should be asking what size tank can house them comfortably for life. And the answer to that is way larger than 99% of the tanks people keep dovii in...

If you have to ask you should be keeping them. And even then...you probably shouldn't be keeping them. Mel's pair in a 600 gallon is a good starting point.

A 180 for a fish that should get at least 20 inches? I would say a 300 would be the minimum. Triz you are right on that but I look at it this way how many pairs have you seen work in anything less than a 300? They might not be as massive as Mels but there are still plenty of examples of large healthy dovii pairs in 300s

I agree with modest man.. A little research of the many threads with this same question asked could have been done. There are so many fish that would fit in that tank for life and you happened to chose one of very few that wont fit for life in a 150. You will however get quite a bit of growth out of a 5x2x2 150 with a pair if dovii and could keep till the 15" range or about 2 or so years, but after that an upgrade will be needed. I suggest finding something that stays a bit smaller. Any other parachromis would love that tank for a pair for life.

8'x3' footprint, 2' tall for a pair for life would be the minimum I would even consider.

8'x30" footprint, 2' tall for a single male for life would be the minimum I would even consider.

Anything less than that, IMHO is cruel. But as was said above, that 150 will be great to grow them out in for a while. You obviously don't need the larger tank when they're 1" juvies, but when the male gets 2'+, you're obviously going to need to have him in a tank with a width bigger than 2'.
