I have one of them and he is actually pretty laid back. He spends most of his tiem hiding behin a water pump in my tank. However, when challenged he doesn't back down either. He grew pretty fast and gained a quite a bit of mass in the six months I have had him.
He is sort of picky about water conditions though. If anything is wrong he lets me know right away.
Mine have grown from 2" to 6"+ since February when I got them. I have six in a 150g with some plecos. They were in with some slightly smaller dovii originally, but they never gave the dovii a chance to eat so I moved the dovii to their own 120g.
My fish are really mellow and get along well together. They huddle together under the same nooks and crannies in the large bogwood pieces in their tank 2 or 3 at a time. It appears to be out of companionship not fear. I don't expect this to go on much longer but it's been a pleasant surprise so far. I wish I could keep all six. They are characters...much less reclusive than my dovii.
Here's a pic of a male above a female to whet your appetite...
a pair of frieddies should be fine, give them a tank with an absoulte minimum footprint of 48"x18", and there care is about the same as any other larger cichlid.
