Hi, first post here at MFK although been reading up on very useful information all the way through setting up my new ish tank!

I went down to the lfs today and bought around an 8 inch Jaguar Cichlid and introduced it to my tank with a 7 inch Oscar and 5 inch Green Texas Cichlid

At first the Oscar and Jaguar lip locked for a few minutes to which surprisingly the Oscar actually won, however since then everytime the Jaguar goes near the Oscar, the Oscar sort of turns on it's side and acts all sort of soft. Is this normal behaviour? they don't really bother each other at all other than that apart from when the Texas decides to be brave and nips at the Jaguar which seems to provoke pretty much all the fish in the tank to have a brief spat with one another (Synodontis and Gibbicep included) :S

btw the tank is 7x2x2

Thanks :)

Picture of earlier on today! all seems quiet now, Oscar in question has attacked and in some cases killed all other attempted tank mates (a few other oscars, a couple of similar sized green texas cichlids etc) is this a good mix in the long term? any suggestions of minimizing violence etc would be greatly appreciated

I had an oscar that took it upon himself to be the peacekeeper of the tank. He never fought anybody until other guys started fighting, then he'd break it up. Turns out some members on here have had similar experiences

Yup that sounds like my Oscar in my 240.
Op, just keep an eye on them. The Oscar was defending his territory so was able to back the Jag off but I wouldn't expect that to happen for long. Long term will boil down to the behaviour of the individual Jag. Hopefully he's a mellow one. Good luck.

i would keep a close eye on the jag, it's quite likely when it gets more used to the tank it will kill the oscar unless you have a mild tempered one, you never know with cichlids.

I'd agree with everybody else, just keep an eye on the jag. When he gets used to HIS tank, he will probably become much more aggressive.

The behavior your describing sounds like the oscar is surrendering and being submissive. A video would help.

All seems to have settled between the Oscar and the Jag, they even lie on top of each other when they sleep!
The Texas Cichlid that I have is not even half the size of the other two but he keeps starting fights with them, even the Jag, seems to have a death wish at times! The Jag breaks up any fights in the tank and then just leaves it at that
Anyhow all seems to be working out well so far!
